My Side of the Mountain

Hey… I am Sam Gribley. I used to live in New York City but I ran away from home to prove to my father that I wasn’t afraid to live on my own in my great grandfather’s land. My grandfather’s land is called Catskill Mountains.

My house is probably not the house you would think a wild boy would live in. Like a cave or a house made of sticks. But I live in a tree. Pretty crazy right? Well it’s actually really cozy. When I first found it, it was only big enough for me to sit down in. Then I saw that it was rotting inside. So I started to scrape the rotting bark away until I could be able to stand up in it.

My first week there I got pretty lonely. So one day I decided to catch a duck hawk. When I caught her I named her Frightful because of the trouble we went through getting used to each other. I trained her to catch food for us to eat.

For food I ate fruits, nuts, meat, roots, and used plants for spices. On Halloween I decided to have a halloween party. I took some of the food I stored outside for the other animals. That was a big mistake after the animals ate all my food they ransacked my house and took most of my food that I stored for the winter. I made a new friend though Jessie C. James he was a racoon. He was a fat racoon that sleept all day at the top of the tree.

I made my winter suit from deerskin. I also made rabbit fur underwear and moccasins from rabbit skin. I made a glove for my hand so that Frightful’s talons couldn’t cut up my hands.

I started having guests after a few weeks. It started to feel like it wasn’t my mountain anymore I thought it was turning into a city like the one I used to live in and I got real upset about it. Then my family came and they decided to stay with me until I was old enough to live on my own, in the Catskill Mountains.
